Edward Abel

Edward Ernest Abel, loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend died Monday May 23, 2022 from congestive heart failure. He was 80 years old. He lived a full life filled with love and service to others. Ed was born December 2, 1941, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Ernest George and Mary Westmoreland Abel. He was their only child for many years. Ed spent his early years living in Ogden, Perry, Tremonton and Garland. Ed was often known as Eddie or Teddy in his younger years. He and his family loved to travel throughout the country, often going to national parks or to South Carolina, where his ancestors are from. He loved spending time with his cousin Jim, who was like a brother to him. When he was a teenager, his parents adopted three siblings, Sandra, Larry, and Rayma. They grew to have a great bond with each other. Ed met his sweetheart, Bonnie Lou Johnson, while they were both attending Bear River High School in Garland. They were married June 17, 1960. They were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple July 6, 1961, the same day their best friends, the Sommers, were sealed in the same temple. Ed graduated from Bear River High School and went on to attend some college at Utah State University. Ed and Bonnie would have celebrated 62 earthly years together this June. They have four children-Ginger Carlisle ( Cecil ) , Mindi Bartlett ( Jon ) , Brian Abel, and Brent Abel ( Sherron) Ed spent most of his career in the grocery business. He started as a clerk at a little grocery store in Garland called Rudy’s IGA. He then went on to manage many different Smith’s grocery stores from Brigham City to Ogden. The family moved to Roy in 1968 to be closer to his job. In 1975 he took a job with Proctor and Gamble as their soap division salesman. He was over all of Utah south of Salt Lake City. This meant another move for the family, and they settled in Orem. He loved being a salesman. If you went in any grocery store, from here to St. George, just the mention of his name would put a smile on the store employees faces. They knew him well. Everyone loved visiting with him, laughing, and telling stories together. He took early retirement from this job after more than 20 years. A few years later, he started working for the Blindman selling window coverings. Once again, he loved talking to people, learning about their lives and helping them however he could. Ed loved doing yardwork, his huge yard has been filled with flowering trees, beautiful flowers, and a harvest of vegetables. Bonnie would help has well. For many years they were given the “Orem City Beautification Award” for having such a beautiful yard. This yard was a place of many family memories, including easter egg hunts with the grandkids, playing bocci ball, or building a huge skateboard ramp. Ed and Bonnie also enjoyed traveling to some memorable places including the Grand Canyon, Hawaii, Florida, the East coast and Nauvoo. Ed lived a life of service and love to so many people. He was the first to notice when new neighbors moved in and rushed over to meet them. He was the first to notice when neighbors needed help in the yard or their home, often shoveling walks, helping dig sprinkler trenches, giving them apricots or vegetables from their yard, or just taking them a box of soap. He loved talking to people and being a part of their lives. He served in many capacities in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His greatest love was serving as cub master for over 30 years. Even when he was called to be an executive secretary in the Bishopric, he still wanted to be involved in cub scouts. He spent more than 25 years either in the bishopric, as an Elders Quorum president, or high priest Group Leader. He loved the gospel and loved serving others. His greatest service has been to his wife Bonnie, whom he loved with all his heart. She has had health problems for the past 20 years and he has always been there for her. In April 2021, Ed had a stroke which left him unable to communicate like he could. This was very hard for him as he is such a talker. He worked hard with the therapist to be able to talk the best he could. He was a fighter and determined to get through the devastating effects of the stroke. He wanted his life to be as normal as possible. This past March he started declining again. He tried so hard to hang on for his wife and family. We know he had the greatest reunion in Heaven with all who have gone before him. Ed is survived by his wife, Bonnie, his four children, 17 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Mary, and his sister Sandra. Funeral services will be held Monday June 6, 2022 at the LDS chapel at 762 East 1200 North in Orem Viewing at 11 am- Funeral Services at Noon A Viewing will also be held Sunday evening June 5 2022 at Nelson Mortuary 4780 N University Ave, Provo from 6pm-8pm. A big thank you to Active Home Health and Hospice, many families and friends for their love and care for Ed and Bonnie during this difficult time. We love you all.
